Granville, Ohio – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team sits in second place with 452.5 points following day one of the Denison Invitational. Emory is in first with 565 points.
The Bears' team of
Austin Bick,
Jonathan Ma,
Nicolas Gomez and
Kai Garren took third in the 200 freestyle relay, racing to an NCAA B cut time of 1:21.74, besting its preliminary time of 1:22.00. The group of
Nathan Lin,
Justin Rockaway,
Kai Taft and
Danny Sibley were right behind them in fourth with a time of 1:22.89.
Senior
Mason Kelber finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:24.71, hitting an NCAA B cut and shaving time off his 4:25.58 preliminary time. Sophomore
Pace Edwards took fifth with an NCAA B cut time of 4:29.44 while
Jeffrey Forbes finished sixth with an NCAA B cut time of 4:31.21.
Alexander McCormick was the top Bears' finisher in the 200 IM, taking sixth in an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.65. First-year
Ethan Feng finished tied for 10
th, hitting an NCAA B cut in 1:50.37.
Bick led the Bears in the 50 freestyle, taking third with an NCAA B cut time of 20.43.
WashU wrapped up the day with a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of McCormick,
Jonathan Kim, Ma and Bick raced to an NCAA B cut time of 3:17.78, besting its preliminary time by 10 seconds. The team of
Kyle Wolford, Lin, Gomez and
Reece Bends finished seventh with a time of 3:21.89.
Junior
Matthew Larsen raced a time trial in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:55.12.
WashU is back tomorrow with day two of the Denison Invitational with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The Bears' divers head to Grinnell for a two-day invitational, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
