No. 8 Men's Swimming and Diving Sits in Second After First Day of D3 Shootout

Chicago, Ill. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team is in second with 223 points following day one of the D3 Shootout hosted by the University of Chicago. Chicago is in first place with 285 points.
 
In the first race of the day, the 200 medley relay, the team of Alexander McCormick, Kai Taft, Jonathan Ma and Austin Bick took fourth with a time of 1:32.45. Chicago's group won the race in 1:30.52, setting a new invitational record.
 
Sophomore Danny Sibley finished second in the 400 IM, racing to a time of 3:59.86, hitting a NCAA B Cut. He was just edged by Pomona-Pitzer's Larry Yu who won in 3:59.73. First-year Ethan Feng won the B final with a time of 4:03.29.
 
Senior Mason Kelber was the top Bears' finisher in the 200 freestyle, finishing fourth in 1:41.38. Chicago's Arthur Kiselnik won the field in 1:40.04. Sophomore Ryan Hillery finished second in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 1:42.87.
 
Junior Austin Bick finished third in the 50 freestyle, racing to a time of 21.02. Chicago's Jonathan Tang won in 20.74. Senior Jonathan Ma took second in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 21.35.
 
The Bears took fourth in the mixed 400 medley relay. The team of Taft, Kelber, Alice Han and Anna Fonda raced to a time of 3:48.98. Chicago's team won in 3:40.98.
 
Sophomore diver Elliot Polikowski took seventh on the 1-meter board with a score of 148.60.
 
Ma, a senior, finished third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.63. Chicago's Jesse Ssengonzi won the field with an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.95. Hillery won the B final, finishing eighth overall, with a time of 1:52.11.
 
McCormick led the Bears in the 100 backstroke, finishing second with a time of 50.08. Chicago's JP Phillips won in 49.38, an NCAA B Cut. Sibley finished sixth in the B final and 13th overall with a time of 54.52.
 
Feng was the top WashU finisher in the 100 breaststroke, taking seventh with a time of 59.14. Chicago's Garrett Clasen won in 56.53. Taft finished 12th overall after taking fifth in the B final with a time of 1:00.83.
 
In the final race of the day, the 800 freestyle relay, the team of Sibley, Kelber, Hillery and Feng finished second with a time of 6:48.80. Chicago's team took first in 6:46.26.
 
The Bears wrap up the D3 Shootout tomorrow with an 11 a.m. start time.
