Greencastle, Ind. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 67-52 on Sunday afternoon to Illinois Wesleyan in the Midwest Challenge title game at the Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Ind.
Sunday's loss ends the Bears' four-game winning streak, as WashU drops to 4-1 on the year and IWU moves to 5-2 with the victory.
WashU struggled from behind the arc, shooting a season-low 2-19 as a team in the loss. Turnovers also proved costly for the Bears on Sunday, as they finished the contest with 25 in total, marking a season-high.
Illinois Wesleyan scored 19 points off turnovers and Lauren Huber led all scorers with a game-high 31 points and 12 rebounds on 13-21 shooting.
Three Bears finished the contest in double figures scoring and Maya Arnott once again led WU in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds on 6-9 shooting. Arnott has scored in double figures for the fifth straight contest this season.
Sammi Matoush compiled 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists, and first-year Jordan Rich recorded a season-high 10 points on 5-8 shooting. Additionally, Nailah McBeth recorded six points and six rebounds, respectively.
In the first period, the Bears had trouble scoring consistently and were held to 2-9 shooting for the quarter, which led to an 11-4 deficit with two minutes left in the period.
Matoush paced the offense with five points and drained a three late in the quarter to cut the lead down to two, but nine turnovers as a team in the frame helped IWU secure a 14-9 advantage.
The Bears managed to tie up the contest at 21-all with 42 seconds left in the second after a pair of buckets in the paint from Liv Muse and Jordan Rich, but the Titans would end the period on a 5-0 run, including a fastbreak layup at the buzzer for a 26-21 lead at the half.
Illinois Wesleyan outscored WashU 26-16 in the third quarter and after leading 34-29, used an 11-0 run to push the lead out to 45-29.
WashU had its best offensive shooting numbers statistically in the third on 8-16 shot attempts, but IWU shot 57 percent and led by as much as 17 in the period, at 50-33. Arnott scored 10 of the Bears' 16 points in the frame, shooting a perfect mark of 5-5 in the period.
The Bears shot 46 percent from the field in the fourth but trailed by double digits the remainder of the contest as Illinois Wesleyan continued to stretch out the lead.
WashU returns to action this Thursday at Westminster at 6 p.m. CT.
