Bloomington, Ill. – The No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team won the Illinois Wesleyan Invite on Saturday afternoon with 123 points. Illinois Wesleyan finished second with 67 points and Principia finished third with eight points.
The Bears opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay as the team of
Alexander McCormick,
Justin Rockaway,
Jonathan Ma and
Kai Garren raced to a time of 1:35.81.
Junior
Mark Lipkin won the field in the 200 freestyle, racing to a time of 1:44.69. First-year
Matthew Walker finished second in 1:46.74 while
Brendan Long took third in 1:47.93.
Kenneth Yeh rounded out WashU's top-five finishers, taking fourth in 1:48.53.
Jonathan Kim was victorious in the 200 IM, winning in 1:56.57.
Mason Kelber followed in second with a time of 1:57.21 while
Austin Bick took third in 1:57.63.
Ryan Hillery finished in fourth in 1:58.77 and
William Little rounded out the top five with a time of 2:01.40.
First-year
Nicolas Gomez won the field in the 50 freestyle, racing to a time of 21.80.
Nathan Lin took third in 21.98 while Ma took fourth with a time of 22.10.
Kai Taft took fifth in 22.19.
Gomez won his second race of the day in the 100 butterfly, racing to a time of 51.90. Lin finished second in 52.48 while Kim finished third in 52.84. Feng took fourth with a time of 52.99 and Walker finished fifth in 53.12.
Lipkin won his second race of the day in the 100 freestyle, claiming the top spot in 47.69. Kelber took second in 48.41 while Garren finished fourth in 49.62 and
Jeffrey Forbes finished fifth in 50.32.
Sophomore
Pace Edwards won the field in the 500 freestyle, racing to a first-place time of 4:47.09.
Danny Sibley took second in 4:51.04 and
Orluke Borjigin finished third with a time of 4:52.85.
Brendan Long claimed fourth in 4:52.98 and first-year
Reece Bends rounded out the top five with a time of 4:55.36.
McCormick won the 100 backstroke – setting a new pool record – with a time of 51.30. The previous pool record was 52.07, set by Carthage's Sam Gabriel in 2017.
Kyle Wolford finished second in 52.74 while Kim took third in 54.05.
Ryan Wood took fourth with a time of 54.49 and Zhu finished fifth in 54.59.
Feng led the field in the 100 breaststroke, racing to a first-place time of 59.89. Rockaway finished second with a time of 1:00.16 and Little took third in 1:02.20. Sibley finished fourth in 1:02.57 and
Mason Rhode claimed fifth in 1:03.72.
In the final race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, WashU's team of Bick, Garren, Sibley and Rockaway won in 1:27.35.
The Bears are back in action Dec. 1-3. The swimmers will head to the Denison University Invitational while diving will head to the Grinnell College Invitational.
