St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to rally back and defeat No. 14 Millikin 72-66 in overtime on Saturday evening in the 21st Annual McWilliams Classic championship game at the Field House.
With the victory, WashU moves to 3-0 on the year, as the Bears claim their 15th McWilliams Classic title in program history.
From the third quarter to the end of OT, WashU outscored Millikin 44-27 and out-rebounded the Big Blue 28-16.
In addition, both Jessica Brooks and Maya Arnott were chosen to the All-Tournament Team.
Arnott led the Bears in scoring and rebounds with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds on 8-11 shooting.
Brooks came up with multiple clutch buckets in overtime and finished the evening with 18 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, which was a team-best.
Also scoring in double figures for WashU was Karissa Grandison, who posted 13 points and shot 7-8 from the foul line, along with Sammi Matoush, who recorded 12 points and five rebounds.
WashU finished the game with 42 points scored in the paint and added 17 second-chance points, as the Bears also scored 12 points off turnovers.
Millikin shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the first period and knocked down four threes as they jumped out to an early advantage. The Big Blue ended the quarter on a 10-3 scoring run and led 24-13 going into the second quarter.
The Bears had a strong offensive effort in the second and shot 6-10 from the field, but Millikin continued to get good looks offensively and maintained a double-digit lead going into the half at 39-28.
Matoush scored six points to pace the Bears' offense in the third quarter as both teams only combined for 19 points in the frame, but the Bears continued to chip away at the lead.
Defensively, the Bears played well in the third and held MU to just 27 percent shooting.
WashU outscored the Big Blue 12-7 in the quarter and cut the deficit down to just six points at 46-40 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, WU used a quick 6-1 run to tie up the contest after Matoush drained a three from the wing to even the game at 47-all.
On the ensuing possession, WashU took its first lead of the night after a driving layup from Brooks gave the Bears a 49-47 edge.
Arnott stepped up in the fourth quarter and scored seven points on 3-3 shooting as the game continued to flip back-and-forth with scoring ties and three lead changes.
WashU trailed 59-55 with just 31 seconds to play but the Bears closed out regulation on a 4-0 run, as Grandison converted on two free throws and then Brooks tied the game up on the ensuing possession on a put-back layup attempt.
The Bears owned the overtime period, outscoring Millikin 13-7. Brooks scored six points in the OT period as WU took advantage of their size on the offensive glass, out-rebounding MU 7-2.
In addition, WashU made things difficult defensively for the Big Blue and held them to 3-7 shooting, as they eventually iced the game in the final minute, knocking down 5-8 free throw attempts.
The Bears will return to action next Saturday against Rose-Hulman at 4 p.m. CT in the Midwest Challenge in Greencastle, Ind.
