Football Concludes Regular Season with Win at Carroll

Waukesha, Wis. – The Washington University in St. Louis football team defeated Carroll, 37-7, in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Bears finish out the CCIW slate with a 7-2 mark and sit in third.
 
WashU won the toss and deferred, giving Carroll the ball to open the game. The Pioneers made it just six yards however, ending the drive in a punt.
 
The Bears started their first drive of the game with an 11-yard pass from quarterback Clark Stephens to Collin Goldberg. Stephens connected with Collin Hoyhtya for a 16-yard pass and Kenneth Hamilton followed that up with a five-yard run.
 
Stephens continued to have a solid drive with a 19-yard pass to Hamilton, giving the Bears a first down at the nine yard line. Hamilton ran for five yards and senior Cole Okmin picked up a yard. Following an incomplete pass, WashU set up for a 20-yard field goal from senior Chris Vartanian, which was good to give the Bears a 3-0 edge.
 
WashU's defense held Carroll to just five yards on the next drive, resulting in another punt. The Bears started their drive with a four-yard gain from first-year Fred Ware, followed by a four-yard pass from Stephens to Hoyhtya.
 
Stephens then launched a 29-yard pass to Hoyhtya for a first down at the 12 and Ware picked up another three yards to the nine. Stephens connected with Goldberg for the final nine yards and a touchdown. Vartanian's kick was good, putting the Bears up 10-0.
 
Carroll scored its lone touchdown on the next drive.
 
The drive started with a two-yard loss, but the Pioneers made up major ground on the next play as quarterback Tyler McClain hit Josh Hill for a 13-yard pass. Carroll moved up another 15 yards to its own 46 and a first down on a WashU face mask penalty.
 
McClain ran for three yards and Nick Legnaioli picked up eight yards for a first down at the 43. Legnaioli picked up another 7 yards and McClain hit Austin Eichstaedt for a 19-yard pass. The duo connected again, this time for a 17-yard touchdown, followed by a good kick from Jacob Laurent, cutting WashU's lead to 10-7 with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
 
The Bears had one play prior to the first quarter ending. Stephens found Okmin for a seven-yard pass to the 45. Hamilton ran for 11 yards and then again for 20 yards to pick up a first down at the 14. Okmin ran for three yards and Stephens found Hamilton for four yards. The Bears moved up another four yards for a first down at the three yard line following an unnecessary roughness call on Carroll. The Bears, however, we then called for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in a loss of 15 yards.
 
Hamilton ran for another five yards before Stephens found Goldberg for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Vartanian's kick was blocked, putting WashU up 16-7.
 
The Bears scored once more before halftime, starting the drive with 5:33 remaining.
 
Okmin caught a 19-yard pass from Stephens for a first down at the Bears' own 47. Stephens hit Goldberg for a 13-yard pass and Ware ran for 16 yards and another first down at the 26. Ware ran for another three yards and Stephens launched a 20-yard pass to Hoyhtya for a first down at the two yard line. Okmin caught a two-yard pass from Stephens to finish the drive with a touchdown, and Vartanian's kick was good to put WashU up 23-7 at the half.
 
WashU received to start the second half, starting things off at the 34 yard line.
 
Stephens hit Goldberg for a 25-yard pass at the 41 for a first down. Hamilton ran for nine yards, but the Bears were called for a 10-yard holding penalty. Stephens connected with Goldberg for 17 yards and Hamilton ran for one yard. After a loss of two yards, Stephens found Okmin for eight yards for a first down at the 26.
 
Stephens found Hoyhtya for a 19-yard touchdown pass and Vartanian's kick was good, giving the Bears a 30-7 edge.
 
On the next drive, Carroll reached the 39, but senior Gus Christensen intercepted McClain's pass, giving WashU the possession.
 
The Bears' possession ended in a punt after making it just five yards. The next Carroll possession also resulted in nothing, as they turned the ball over on downs.
 
WashU scored its final touchdown on its first possession of the fourth quarter.
 
Stephens' pass attempt to Gabriel Sirek was incomplete, but Carroll was hit with a pass interference call, giving the Bears 15 yards and a first down at the 46. Stephen's connected with Okmin for a 21-yard pass and a first down at the 25, followed by a three-yard gain from Hamilton.
 
Hamilton caught a short six-yard pass from Stephens and then found Hoyhtya for another six yards. Carroll was then called for a facemask, moving the Bears up another five yards to the five. WashU lost two yards but then Stephens hit Sirek for a seven-yard touchdown. Vartanian's kick was good, putting WashU up 37-7 which held until the end of the game.
 
The Bears finished with 416 yards of total offense including 295 passing and 121 rushing. The Bears defense held Carroll to just 182 yards of total offense and a low 52 yards of rushing.
 
In his first collegiate start, Stephens finished 24-for-29 with 295 yards of offense, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Hamilton notched 58 yards on 14 attempts while Ware finished with 47 yards on 10 attempts. Hoyhtya led the receivers with 107 yards on seven catches with one touchdown while Goldberg had 94 yards on seven receptions with two touchdowns.
 
Defensively, Matthew Schmal had nine total tackles included five solo while Christensen had nine total with three solo, 2.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one interception. Ryan Schmadtke had four total tackles, one tackle for a loss and one interception. Shawn Yates also had a reception on the day.
