Grand Rapids, Mich. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team fell 3-1 in a highly contested match to No. 20 Hope on Friday evening in the NCAA Championship second round.
WashU dropped the match by a score of 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20 and officially concludes the 2022 season with a record of 30-6.
Hope moves to 23-7 overall and advances to Saturday's regional final against No. 3 Calvin.
Senior Lane Bohrer had another great performance on Friday, tallying a team-best and season-high 19 kills while hitting .306 for the match. Bohrer also posted nine digs and a team-high six block assists.
Lily Steinbach matched her career-high in kills with 12, and Michaela Bach closed out the contest with 17 digs and seven kills.
Jasmine Sells, who tied her career-high in kills in yesterday's win over Millikin chipped in with eight.
Defensively, Taryn Gurbach registered 21 digs to lead WU, while setter Sam Buckley collected a team-high 44 assists and added nine digs.
For the match, WashU hit .236 and notched 53 kills, as Hope finished with 63 kills in total.
In the opening set, it proved to be another back-and-forth battle with eight scoring ties and five lead changes.
After WashU maintained an early 10-9 edge, Hope caught fire and used a 10-3 scoring run to push ahead 19-13, their largest lead of the set.
WU rallied back and cut the deficit down to just two points at 23-21, but Hope would finish off the set by winning the next two points.
The Bears got into a great rhythm in the second set, recording 16 kills with just one hitting error, as they compiled a .429 hitting mark.
WashU jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, establishing some momentum as the Bears looked to even up the match.
Hope fought back and tied up the set multiple different times, but WashU would not let their great start to the set go to waste.
Leading 17-16, the Bears went on an 8-1 run to close out the set, with Bohrer recording three kills in the frame.
WashU found itself in another tight set in the third frame, with seven ties and three lead changes.
WashU held on to a 10-9 lead early on, but the Flying Dutch would reclaim the lead for good after a 3-0 run.
WU kept within striking distance the rest of the set, but failed to regain the lead and Hope took a 2-1 advantage.
The Bears had a tough fourth set and trailed through its entirety, falling in an early hole at 16-9.
WashU managed to reduce the deficit down to three points at 23-20, looking to spark a comeback victory, but the Flying Dutch would win the final two points to seal the victory.
