No. 7 Volleyball Sweeps (RV) Cornell

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team defeated (RV) Cornell College, 3-0, on Friday evening in the WashU Red and Green Invite. The Bears are now 23-3 on the year.
 
Set 1: WashU 25, Cornell 16
WashU got off to a hot start, taking a 9-3 lead behind three kills from Michaela Bach. Lily Steinbach notched two kills to extend the lead to 10-4 and a kill from Lane Bohrer and an ace from Elise Kilroy bumped it to 12-4.
 
Three-straight points from Cornell cut it to 12-7 but the Bears extended it to 17-8 following a kill from Bohrer and an ace from Sam Buckley. The Rams scored another three-straight for a 17-11 WashU lead.
 
Bohrer recorded back-to-back kills to push the Bears' lead to 15-14 and a kill from Zoe Foster secured the set to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
Set 2: WashU 25, Cornell 20
The Bears once again had a hot start, going up 6-1 to start.
 
Buckley got things going with an ace and two kills from Foster to lead the run. After a Cornell point, the Bears added three more points for a 9-2 advantage.
 
Back-to-back kills from Bach and Steinbach pushed WashU's lead to 11-3.
 
The Bears continued to hold a commanding lead and went up 20-12 on a block from Steinbach and Buckley. Cornell, however, went on a 5-0 run to cut WashU's lead to 20-17.
 
A kill from Bohrer stopped the Rams' run and another kill from Foster extended WashU's lead to 22-17. Foster ended the set with a kill to give the Bears a 2-0 match edge.
 
Set 3: WashU 25, Cornell 20
Cornell started the third match on a 4-1 run which included a kill and a block from Carly Puffer.
 
The Bears tied things up 5-5 on a kill and service ace from Bach and took a lead following a 4-0 run to go up 10-7. Steinbach, Bach and Bohrer each picked up a kill during the run.
 
Cornell tied things up again 11-11 following two blocks from Ella McLaughlin.
 
Bohrer, Bach and Davis notched kills to put the Bears up 14-11 but the Rams continued to fight, tying the match again at 15, ant 16 before going up 19-16.
 
Down 20-18, WashU went on a 7-0 run to close out the set and take the match 3-0.
 
The 7-0 run was fueled by a pair of aces from Taryn Gurbach and a pair of attacks from Foster, including the final point of the game.
 
Bach led the way for WashU with 12 kills and 10 digs while Bohrer had 11 kills with 10 digs. Foster also finished with 11 kills. Gurbach finished with 20 digs.
 
The Bears face Earlham tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. and Grinnell at 1 p.m. to close out the Red and Green Invite.
