No. 5 Volleyball Sweeps Rochester, Falls to No. 6 Emory at UAA Round Robin #2

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The No. 5 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team split its two matches on Sunday at the UAA Round Robin #2 Tournament at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. 
 
The Bears defeated Rochester with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-12, 25-13) but then fell 3-1 to Emory (25-22, 17-25, 18-25, 17-25) to close out the afternoon.
 
After Sunday, WashU currently sits at 16-2 overall with a 4-1 record in UAA league play and sits atop the league standings with UChicago and NYU. 
 
The Bears will next return to St. Louis on October 7-8 for the WashU Invite at the Field House. 
 
WashU vs Rochester 
 
The Bears made quick work of Rochester on Sunday morning to open the UAA Round Robin #2 Tournament. 
 
WashU compiled a .359 hitting mark for the match, the second best hitting percentage the Bears have achieved this season. 
 
WashU pulled ahead 10-5 through the first 15 points of the first set, taking advantage of Rochester miscues and winning four points off kills. 
 
WU extended its lead to 18-7 after an 8-2 scoring run gave the Bears a commanding lead. WashU recorded an impressive .368 hitting clip in the opening frame and finished with seven kills and no errors. 
 
A service ace from Amanda Gild finished off the set in favor of the Bears at 25-17. 
 
There was no let up in the second set, as the Bears continued to play their game and be aggressive. 
 
With 13 kills in the set, WashU hit .345 in the second and quickly sprinted out to a 9-3 lead. 
 
After the Yellowjackets sliced the lead down to 11-9, WashU embarked on an 11-1 scoring run, thanks to seven kills, including five from Michaela Bach in the scoring stretch. 
 
The Bears took the final two points of the set off a service error and a kill from Lily Steinbach
 
In the third and final frame, WashU burst ahead 10-1, winning five points off kills and three service aces from Elise Gilroy
 
Later in the set, the Bears maintained a 10-point advantage at 16-6, before winning five of the final six points in the set to win the match. Back-to-back kills from Steinbach and Jasmine Sells clinched the win for the Bears. 
 
In total, WU collected 32 kills, nine service aces and seven total blocks. Bach compiled a team-high nine kills along with seven digs in the victory. 
 
Lane Bohrer posted seven kills and six digs, while Jasmine Sells chipped in with five kills and two blocks. 
 
Abby Li led the Bears up front with three blocks and Paris Nix also added two blocks. 
 
Sam Buckley finished with 29 assists and Taryn Gurbach notched a team-high 12 digs, marking her 12th match this season in double figures in digs. 
 
Elise Gilroy led WashU with five service aces and also registered seven digs. 
 
WashU vs Emory 
In a matchup between two top-10 nationally ranked opponents, the Bears got off to a strong start, claiming the opening set 25-22. 
 
In a back-and-forth first set with both teams trading leads and early runs, the Bears hung on to a 12-10 lead. 
 
WashU would then increase the lead out to 18-13 before the Eagles fought their way back to reduce the lead down to 21-20. 
 
WashU held off Emory by winning three of the next four points to take a 24-21 lead. Up 24-22, Bach's kill on set point sealed the opening set for the Bears. 
 
However, in the second set, WashU struggled early. The Bears finished the set with 10 kills but committed 10 errors. 
 
Emory won the first six points right out of the gate to put the Bears in an early hole. After clawing back to trim the deficit down to one at 13-12, EU won the next four points and were immediately back in command. 
 
WashU fought back again to get the lead within a point at 18-17, but the Eagles' 7-0 scoring run following suit would end the set and even the match. 
 
Emory carried its momentum over into the third set but the Bears battled hard in the early going.
 
With EU ahead 9-8, the Eagles ignited a 7-1 run and were ahead 16-9 as WashU was unable to keep up. 
 
WU managed to get back within three points at 18-15, but could not get any closer, as Emory won seven of the final 10 points to take a 2-1 lead. 
 
WashU hit .235 in the fourth set, but Emory posted 15 kills and collectively hit .382. After another tight back-and-forth match in the opening stages of the set, Emory maintained a 9-8 edge. 
 
However, the Eagles would then go on an 11-2 scoring run to put the set out of reach from the Bears. WashU made one final rally, cutting the lead down to six at 21-15, but Emory would charge ahead and win the set 25-17 to take the match. 
 
Emory collected 50 kills, 14 service aces, and eight blocks in total as a team.
 
The Bears finished the contest with 51 kills, as Michaela Bach registered a 20-kill performance for the second time this season to lead WU. The St. Louis native also finished the match with a team-best .333 hitting mark. 
 
Lane Bohrer also posted 11 kills and Paris Nix totaled seven in the loss. 
 
Sam Buckley collected 42 assists, and also added three blocks. 
 
Three Bears finished in double digits in digs with Gurbach recording 18, Elise Gilroy finishing with 15, and Bohrer adding 10.
