St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team won its fifth consecutive game on Wednesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Greenville at the Field House.
With the win, WashU surges ahead to 21-2 on the season and remains perfect at home (13-0).
The Bears won the contest 25-11, 25-16, 14-25, 25-16, sweeping the Panthers on the season as they marked their 17th straight win over Greenville.
Before tonight's match, fifth year outside hitter
Michaela Bach was recognized for reaching 1,000 career kills earlier this season. Bach is a part of an elite company, joining just 29 other players in school history who have achieved this accomplishment.
On Wednesday, WU dominated the opening set with a convincing 25-11 set victory. The Bears quickly pulled ahead with an early 8-0 run.
WashU extended its lead out to 18-3, before finishing off the set, as they hit .452 in the opening set and registered 16 kills.
In the second frame, the Bears used a different lineup but still continued to roll. After holding on to an early 7-6 lead, WU used a 11-2 scoring run to pull away and take a double-digit advantage at 18-8.
Later in the set, Greenville rallied back and reduced the margin down to 19-15, but the Bears would close out the set on a 6-1 scoring run for a 2-0 set lead.
However, WashU struggled to keep its momentum rolling in the third set. Despite three early scoring ties, Greenville used a 13-4 run to break away from a 6-6 tie to hold its largest lead of the night at 19-10.
WU committed nine hitting errors in the set helping the Panthers take the third at 25-14.
The Bears regrouped in the fourth set, but GU continued to make things difficult for the Bears in the early going.
With WashU leading just 13-12, the Bears would breakaway with a massive 9-2 scoring run to take a commanding 22-15 lead. WU would claim the final three points of the match on three kills, as
Jasmine Sells finished it off with her seventh kill of the night on match point.
WashU posted 56 kills altogether with a .285 hitting clip, while Greenville finished with 40 kills and a .156 hitting percentage.
McKenzie Washington led WashU with a career-high 13 kills and hit an impressive .650 for the night, while committing zero hitting errors.
First-year
Tori Taylor notched a season-best nine kills and three blocks, while
Jasmine Sells added seven kills and hit .429 for the evening.
In addition,
Laura Brambilla recorded five kills and
Lucy Davis,
Lily Steinbach, and
Lane Bohrer totaled four apiece.
Defensively,
Elise Gilroy led the way with 14 digs along with two service aces.
Amanda Gild also added 11 digs and
Sam Buckley finished with nine.
Buckley also led WU with a team-high 23 assists, as
Faith Phillips also produced 20 assists in the victory.
The Bears will next be in action on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y. for the UAA Round Robin #3. WashU will face Chicago at noon EST and CWRU at 2:30 p.m.
