Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 4, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team won its season-opener at Fontbonne, 3-1, on Saturday evening. It marks the first win at WashU for Interim Head Coach Stephanie Gabbert.
All four goals in the game were scored in the second half.
Just 10:34 into the second half, senior Jessica Shapiro put in a pass from Sydney Essler to give the Bears a 1-0 edge.
WashU broke through again 15 minutes later in the 71st minute when Jessica Greven scored on an assist from Erin Flynn and Emily Kaufman.
The Bears wasted no time in adding a third goal on the day, as Greven scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Anna Viscovich in the 75th minute.
Just over two minutes later, Fontbonne cut the Bears' lead down to two goals on a shot from Kierstyn Weaver in the 77th minute.
Overall, WashU recorded 14 shots, five of them on goal.
There was just one shot-on-goal in the first half, which was taken by Greven in the 36th minute, but it was saved by goalkeeper Mary Beers. The lone other shot-on-goal that didn't result in a goal for the Bears was in the 88th minute from Eve Kubala.
WashU is back in action on Monday for its first home game of the year against Webster at 1 p.m.
