Box Score Cleveland, Ohio, November 6, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team swept Case Western Reserve (28-26, 25-14, 25-17) at in the fifth-place match at the UAA Championships on Saturday.
The Bears wrap up the UAA Championships with back-to-back victories and move to 18-9 on the season.
WashU had a big day at the net, recording 50 kills altogether as a team and a .282 hitting percentage. Michaela Bach notched a team-best 21 kills, giving her 48 kills in three matches at the UAA Championships.
Caitlin Lorenz finished the match with seven kills and Abby Li totaled six.
With 12 block assists and a solo block, the Bears also got the job done defensively. Abby Li added a team-high four block assists, while Lucy Davis tallied a solo block and two block assists.
Libero Taryn Gurbach registered 17 digs and Amanda Gild and Faith Phillips both had eight digs apiece.
In addition, Phillips posted 41 assists and five kills.
A back-and-forth competitive opening set saw 37 combined kills, as both teams hit over .200 in the frame.
In total, the first set saw nine different ties and several lead changes. The Bears' largest lead of the first set was three points at 14-11.
Late in the first set tied at 26-26, the Bears took advantage of a service error and attack error, giving WashU a 1-0 set lead.
In the second set, the Bears pulled ahead early at 6-2. Holding on to a 12-10 advantage, WU used 10-3 run to put the set out of reach, giving the Bears a 22-13 lead. Back-to-back kills from Lorenz and Jasmine Sells finished off the set for a 2-0 set edge.
WashU kept its foot on the gas in the third set, not letting up on their way to another convincing set victory.
Taking an early 10-3 lead, the Bears held all the momentum and extended their lead out to 11, at 21-10 moments later.
A service ace from Lucy Davis clinched the victory for the Bears at 25-17.
