Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball to Fourth Straight Win with Sweep at Greenville

Greenville, Ill. – October 22, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team notched its fourth straight victory on Friday evening with a 3-0 road sweep at Greenville.

WashU won the match 25-23, 25-16, 25-12 to improve to 15-7 on the season.

Additionally, Friday's win marks the second time this season the Bears have defeated Greenville. WashU won the previous match back on October 9 at the Field House.  

Holding a .290 hitting percentage for the match, WashU recorded 38 kills in three sets on 100 attacks.

The Bears also had a presence up front with seven total blocks on the night.

WashU's passing was on point and their hitting errors were at a minimum, while the Panthers posted 24 errors and were limited to 24 kills in the contest.

Senior Michaela Bach led the balanced Bears' attack again with nine kills. Bach finished the match with a .381 hitting clip and also posted six digs and a solo block.

Alaina Bohrer held six kills and eight digs, while Abby Li and Jasmine Sells both finished with five kills each. Li totaled two solo blocks and Sells also collecting nine digs on the evening. The duo also registered two block assists.

Faith Phillips posted a team-best 28 assists and added 11 digs, while junior Taryn Gurbach collected 16, a team-high.

The Bears won the opening set 25-23 after a back and forth see-saw battle. Statistically, WashU hit .214 for the set and combined for 14 kills.

WashU rallied from multiple deficits in the set as they took advantage of unforced errors from the Panthers and solid play up front at the net.

Trailing 16-13, the Bears quickly rebounded and tied things up after ripping off three straight points. Greenville went back ahead after breaking a 19-19 tie by winning three consecutive points for a 22-19 lead, but WashU closed the set winning six of the final seven points to complete the comeback for a 1-0 set lead.

The Bears got off to a much smoother start in the second set which led to a decisive set victory. The Bears built a 6-3 edge and then roared ahead 16-8 moments later.

In an impressive manner, WashU recorded 14 kills and committed only one error on their way to a .419 hitting percentage throughout the duration of the set. 

The Bears never trailed in the third set as they made quick work of the Panthers. Leading 13-9, WashU put the set out of reach after reeling off eight consecutive points to extend their lead out to 21-9.

A kill from Paris Nix and a service ace from Elise Gilroy wrapped up the set and clinched the match.

WashU will look to extend its winning streak to five as they are back at home on Saturday, October 30 for Senior Day against Milliken at 10:30 a.m.
