Box Score Rochester, N.Y., October 2, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened UAA play with a 3-0 win over Rochester on Saturday morning.
The Bears are now 8-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Rochester is now 5-3-1 overall and 0-1 in UAA action.
WashU put a goal on the board early on, scoring 15:19 into play as Jess Shapiro took a pass from Kate Flynn and found the back of the net to put the Bears up, 1-0. The goal is Shapiro's third of the year.
Although there were chances throughout the rest of the first half, the Bears did not score again until after the break in the 60th minute. Tyler Wilson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, assisted by Shapiro and Gaelen Clayton.
WashU added its final goal in the 76th minute, as Sydney Essler scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Gabbie Cesarone.
Statistically, the Bears dominated, outshooting the Yellowjackets 13-2. Four of the Bears 13 shots were on goal. WashU also registered nine corner kicks to Rochester's one.
Just over four minutes before the first goal, Erin Flynn had a chance as she put a ball on-frame towards the bottom center, but it was saved by Rochester goalkeeper Emma Schechter.
The Bears had two chances prior to scoring their second goal, as Gabby Kogler sent two shots toward goal, but they were both wide of the goal. Kogler had another wide shot in the 69th minute while Anna Viscovich's shot in the 71st and Shapiro's at the 72:00 mark were also wide.
Rochester had just two shots on goal. Megan Pung's attempt in the fourth minute was saved by WashU goalkeeper Sidney Conner. Robin Jong put a ball on-frame in the 63rd minute, which was also stopped by Conner.
The Bears return home next weekend, beginning a three-game homestand with an 11 a.m. game against Emory on Sunday, October 10.
