Late Goal Lifts No. 3 Women's Soccer Past Emory

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo., October 10, 2021 – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored with just 41 seconds left in regulation to defeat Emory, 1-0, in a tough UAA matchup.

The Bears have now won eight games in a row and are 9-0-1 overall with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

The game-winner, scored 89:19 into play, was scored by Jolie Carl for her second goal of the year. First-year Eve Kubala had a breakaway, slipped past Emory's goalkeeper and fired a cross towards goal where Carl was there to finish the job.

WashU had a plethora of scoring chances prior to the goal in the final minute.

Erin Flynn put the first shot on goal for the Bears in the ninth minute, which was saved by goalkeeper Emma Miller. Gaelen Clayton also had an on-frame shot in the 16th minute, which was stopped by Miller. WashU closed out the first half with a shot on goal in the 42nd minute from Jessica Greven, but Miller made the play again.

Miller stopped shots from Tyler Wilson in the 55th minute and Flynn in the 62nd. Flynn had back-to-back attempts in the 67th minute, which Miller saved.

In the 68th minute, Greven had arguably the best chance of the game for the Bears – prior to the goal – when she launched a hard shot from the top of the box, but it narrowly hit the crossbar and bounced away.

Emory also had several scoring chances, but the Bears defense anchored by goalkeeper Sidney Conner stood strong. Conner walked away with a clean sheet after making six saves on the day.

WashU outshot Emory 13-10 and had two more shots on goal (8-6) than the Eagles. The Bears also had six corner kicks to Emory's four.

Flynn finished with a team-high four shots, all of which were on-frame. Lindsey Breskow had the most chances for Emory, with two.

The Bears return home for two UAA games next weekend, starting with a 5:30 p.m. match against NYU on Friday, October 15. WashU then hosts Brandeis at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 17.
