WashU Has Win Streak Snapped at NYU

New York N.Y., Feb. 23, 2020 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start as the Bears had their four-game win streak snapped in a 95-42 loss at New York University Sunday.

NYU improved to 19-5 and 9-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU fell to 14-10 and 7-6 in the league. 

Freshman Sammi Matoush led WashU with 11 points, while senior Kristina Schmelter had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Bears shot a season-low 25.9 percent (14-54) from the field and were outrebounded 52-30. 

WashU trailed 17-2 after the first quarter as the Bears hit just 1-of-13 from the field, including missing its first 12 shots. NYU grew its lead to 29-4 with 7:39 before half.

A pair of free-throws from Matoush and a bucket from freshman Molly Gannon trimmed the lead to 29-8. The Bears could get no closer by half as the NYU took a 42-15 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Janean Cuffee led NYU with 20 points, while Annie Barrett just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. The Violet hit a school-record 16 threes in the win.

WashU concludes regular season play at Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 1 p.m. 

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with NYU 46-21, and the Violets swept the season series … Schmelter went over 800 points for her career … The 16 threes tied a UAA single-game record.
