Early Goal Stands as No. 3 WashU Defeats No. 23 Carnegie

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 1, 2019 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team returned from an 11-day layoff with a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Carnegie Mellon University Friday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.

WashU won its 12th-straight game to improve to 14-1-1 and 5-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Carnegie Mellon dropped to 10-4-1 and 3-2 in the UAA. The Bears have won 15-straight conference games dating back to 2017.

Head coach Jim Conlon picked up career win number 300 as a collegiate women's coach. Conlon has a 300-94-22 (.748) overall record in 20 seasons.

WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 4-2 in the opening half, and the Bears converted the only scoring opportunity for either team in the 12th minute.

Sophomore Erin Flynn hustled to a save a ball in the corner before it went out of bounds, and then crossed a ball into the fox that senior Taylor Cohen volleyed into the back of the net. The goal for Cohen was her team-leading ninth of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Greenfield (14-1-1) made two saves, including a point-blank stop with three minutes left to preserve the shutout.

WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 8-5 and each team had a corner kick.

WashU hosts Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. Prior to the contest WashU will honor its three seniors: Cohen, Olivia Emanuel and Jesse Rubin.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Carnegie Mellon 22-4-2 … The Bears are 49-2-2 at home the past five seasons … WashU has allowed just one first half goal this season … The Bears are 26-6-4 against ranked teams in the last five years … The game-winner for Cohen was the 17th of her career, one shy of the WashU career record.
