Volleyball Collects Two Wins for 34th-Straight 20-win Season

Bloomington, Ill., Oct. 25, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team picked up two more wins on Friday night to mark the 34th-straight season with 20 or more wins in program history. The Bears defeated UW-Platteville 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17) and Augustana 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-12) at the Holliday Inn Classic III on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan. 

WashU moves to 20-6 on the season. UW-Platteville falls to 16-11 on the season while Augustana drops to 11-15 for the year. 

Match 1: WashU def. UW-Platteville 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17)

The Bears came out hot in the first set, swinging at a .367 clip, tallying 13 kills with 2 assists in 30 attempts while holding the Pioneers to just .086 (9 kills, 6 errors, 35 attempts). The WashU offense was led by sophomore Michaela Bach's four kills as freshman Alaina Bohrer chipped in three. 

UW-Platteville used an early six-point run to keep WashU at bay in the second set. The Bears were able to regroup for a grinding third set, led by Tricia Brown's four putaways. 

In the fourth set, the Bears didn't let up on the Pioneers in the fourth set. The Bears tallied 11 kills with four errors in 24 attacks to swing .292 and were able to take advantage of multiple Pioneer errors. 

Bohrer and Bach both tallied 11 kills for the Bears, while senior Leila King chipped in 10 putaways with one error in 15 swings for a .600 hitting percentage. Brown had 15 digs and seven kills, as senior Zoe Baxter tallied 12 digs. Junior setter Kirby Knapp collected 39 assists. 

Match 2: WashU def. Augustana 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-12)

WashU was in control of the match from the first serve. The Bears offense swung at a .356 clip, tallying 42 kills with 10 errors in 90 total attempts as they held the Vikings to a .098 hitting percentage (24 kills, 15 errors, 92 attempts). 

In the first set, the Bears used an early six-point swing to push away from the Vikings, collecting two kills each from Brown and sophomore Caitlin Lorenz and a block by the pair. 

It was the same story in the second set. WashU was able to collect a five-point swing with kills from Bach and Lorenz and capitalizing on Augustana miscues. 

Junior Rachel Cheng heated up for the Bears from the service line in the third set. With Cheng at the service line, WashU collected 12 of their 25 points. 

The Bears offense was paced by Brown's 13 kills and six digs. Cheng tallied 12 digs and four aces. Knapp dished out 24 assists as Baxter chipped in 16 digs and two aces. 

Up Next: 

WashU will host Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 2 when the squad hosts Centre and Millikin. First serve is set for 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. at the WU Field House. The Bears will honor Zoe Baxter, Leila King, Emily Jayne, Hannah Turner and Chloe Stile prior to the match against Centre.
