Cunningham Lifts No. 1 WashU Past Emory in OT

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 29, 2018 – Senior Darcy Cunningham scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the first overtime to lead the No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Emory University in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener Saturday in St. Louis.

Cunningham, who is tied for the UAA lead in goals (7) and points (19), bent a corner kick from the left side of the field past the outstretched arms of Emory goalkeeper Danielle Staffin into the back of the net.

WashU improved to 10-0 and 1-0 in the UAA, while Emory dropped to 6-3 and 0-1 in the UAA. The Bears are off to a 10-0 start for the first time since 2007, and for the third time in school history.

WashU outshot Emory 34-6, including 19-2 in the second half and OT. The Bears also had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU had the 15-4 shot advantage in the first half, and took the 1-0 lead in the 25thminute after Cunningham finished a through ball from senior Jessica Kovach

Emory took advantage of a turnover by WashU in its own end, and its resulted in a goal by Jordan Fitzgerald from 22 yards out in the 38thminute. Emory goalkeeper Staffin made seven saves in the opening half.

Sophomore Emma Greenfield (10-0) made one save and picked up the win in goal. Staffin made a career-high 13 saves for Emory.

WashU plays it first conference road game at No. 18 University of Rochester (5-3-1, 0-1 UAA) on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1:30 p.m. (ET).

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Emory leads the all-time series 16-10-5, but WashU has won the last four meetings… The Bears are one of six remaining undefeated teams in Division III … The victory for head coach Jim Conlonwas his 275thas a collegiate women's coach … The Bears are 35-1-1 at home the past four seasons … The multi-goal game was the second of the season for Cunningham.
