King Leads No. 13 WashU to Ninth Straight Victory

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 17, 2017 – The No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine straight matches with a 3-0 victory over cross town rival Webster University Tuesday evening.

The Bears improved to 19-6 overall with its only action of the week, while Webster dropped to 16-8. WashU exceeded a .300 hitting percentage for the sixth time this season, posting a .326 clip. The Red & Green scored the victory in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19.

Sophomore Leila King led the Bears with 12 kills and she was highly efficient as she posted a season-high hitting percentage attacking the ball at a .706 success rate. Freshman Tricia Brown also eclipsed a .300 mark with 11 kills and four errors in 23 attempts.

Juniors Ifeoma Ufondu (.667) and Julianne Malek (.545) combined for 12 kills while exceeding .500 hitting percentages. Sophomore Chloe Stile totaled 33 assists, her fifth consecutive match of more than 25 assists.

Stile nearly reached a double-double with nine assists. Sophomore Zoe Baxter led the Bears with 11 digs as freshman Rachel Rhyner recorded a season-high with eight.

WashU scored eight unanswered points prior to the Gorloks striking back. Webster went on a 9-6 run before the Bears answered with another run to pull away by double digits. Malek sparked the final run for WashU with a kill as the Bears closed out the first set 25-15.

The Red & Green opened the second set on a 5-0 run which included multiple kills by Brown. Webster pulled within two points briefly before Rhyner and Stile recorded back-to-back kills. Stile assisted on the final five Bears points as WashU scored a 25-17 win.

Webster worked its way to an early lead in the third set and pulled even with the Bears at 14-all. WashU finalized the victory with an 11-5 run which was capped off with a kill by King. The Bears claimed the set 25-19 and won the match 3-0.

The Bears improved to 27-0 all-time against Webster with the victory including multiple wins in 2017.
