No. 6 WashU's Dominant Second Quarter Propels Win

St. Louis, Mo. Dec. 6, 2016 – No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis used a dominant second quarter to propel a 94-47 win over Fontbonne University during Tuesday night's nonconference action in the WU Field House. 

The Bears improved to 7-0 on the season while dropping the Griffins to 2-5. WashU held several advantages in multiple categories including rebounding (46-25), shooting (51.5-to-35.2), assists (23-10), points off of turnovers (36-15) and bench points (61-20).

In the first quarter senior Lily Sarros' layup put WashU ahead 10-3 on the dish from senior Zoe Vernon. Two minutes later Sarros assisted on sophomore Madeline Homoly's three-point play, which gave the Bears a 15-6 lead. After one quarter of play the Bears led 18-13. 

The Bears ran away with the second quarter after Fontbonne cut the score to within three, 22-19. WashU held the Griffins scoreless for the final 6:20 of the half as the Bears added 26 points for a 48-19 advantage at the break. Sophomore Rachael Sondag led the Bears run with all of her first half leading 11 points during the run, including a trio of three pointers.

Vernon scored eight points quickly in less than four minutes of play, as the Bears increased their first half lead to 62-23 with 6:41 left to go in the third quarter. Sophomore Stephanie Botkin added six points for the Bears in the third, as WashU outscored Fontbonne 29-13. After three quarters of play WashU led 77-32. 

Freshmen Camille Keane and Ariana Phillips led the Bears to a 17-15 advantage in the fourth quarter as the tandem combined for 13 of WashU's points. WashU closed out the scoring on a three pointer from Keane.

Four Bears reached double-figures in Vernon (14), Botkin (13), Sondag (13) and Homoly (11). Homoly and Sarros each finished with seven rebounds to lead the Bears. Sophomore Becca Clark-Callender ended with a game-high five assists. Seventeen Bears saw action against the Griffins.
