No. 12 Women's Soccer Falls at Rochester in UAA Opener

Rochester, N.Y., Oct. 1, 2016 – The No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team dropped its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener 3-1 at the University of Rochester Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.

Rochester picked up its first win of the year to improve to 1-4-4, 1-0 in the UAA, while WashU fell to 7-2-1, 0-1 in the UAA.

WashU outshot Rochester 20-6 for the game, and each team had five corner kicks.

WashU did not clear a corner in the 12th minute and it resulted in the first goal for Rochester. Jean Chakmakas headed home a cross from Megan Renyan past senior Lizzy Crist to make it 1-0. The goal allowed by Crist was the first this season.

After sophomore Darcy Cunningham scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute, Rochester responded with another goal off a corner kick by Chakmakas to make it 2-1. The Yellowjackets scored on their first two shots of the contest.

Despite outshooting Rochester 12-3 in the first half, WashU trailed 2-1 at half.

WashU continued the steady pressure in the first 10 minutes searching for the equalizer. Sophomore Caroline Dempsey nearly headed home the tying goal after Cunningham sent a cross from just outside the crease.

With 18 minutes left, junior Mia Mastroianni fired a shot from 30 yards out that was saved by the Rochester keeper at the near post.

Rochester scored the insurance goal in the 80th minute after a back pass from meant or Crist, but McKenzie Runyan intercepted, cut in 1v1 at Crist, and passed across goal mouth to Freitage who buried a shot in an open net.

Crist made one save and suffered her first loss of the season (7-1).

WashU plays its final non-conference game at Fontbonne University on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Clayton High School.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Rochester, 15-11-2, and it was the first win for the Yellowjackets in the series since 2005 … The Bears are 18-6-4 all-time in UAA openers, including a 6-1-2 mark under head coach Jim Conlon.
