Box Score Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 15, 2016 – Senior Luke Silverman-Lloyd and sophomore Andrew Sanders both notched career-highs while combining to score 50 points and lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to a 96-80 University Athletic Association (UAA) win at Case Western Reserve University Friday night.
WashU improved to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the UAA, while Case fell to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. WashU continues its road trip with an 11 a.m. (ET) tip-off at Carnegie Mellon University Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Both teams came out firing with six lead changes in the opening eight minutes of the game. Case made its third three of the game to take a 20-19 lead with 11:59 left in the first half. WashU answered with a 17-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from the wing by sophomore Kevin Kucera with four seconds on the shot clock, to give the Bears a 36-24 lead with 8:05 remaining. The Spartans cut the lead to five on a three-pointer with less than two minutes left, but Silverman-Lloyd drained his fifth three to give WashU a 51-43 lead at halftime.
The Spartans cut the lead to 58-52 with 17:59 to play in the game, but WashU answered with an 8-0 run over the next 90 seconds to quickly extend the lead to 14. Case got to within 11 before a 9-1 run by the Bears, capped by Silverman-Lloyd's seventh three of the game, gave WashU its largest lead of the game at 78-59 with 11:44 remaining. The closest the Spartans could get the remainder of the game was 12 points as the Bears finished with a 16-point win.
WashU shot 52.7 percent from the field (39-74), including a season-high 60 percent (12-20) from three-point range. Case shot 39.5 percent (32-81) from the field and was 9-of-30 (30 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bears also finished with a 47-42 edge in rebounding.
Sanders notched his fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Silverman-Lloyd added a career-high 24 points on a career-best 7-of-8 from three-point range, while also dishing out a career-high nine assists. Sophomore David Schmelter also equaled his career-highs with 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field, and four blocked shots. Kucera, junior Clinton Hooks and sophomore Matt Highsmith added eight points each. Hooks also had seven rebounds and four assists, Kucera had six rebounds and five assists, and Highsmith had five rebounds.
Bear Notebook: WashU improved to 43-4 all-time against Case, winning for the 21st game in a row at Cleveland … Case entered the game leading the UAA in three-point percentage (38.1) … The Bears' 12 three-pointers and 11 blocked shots were both season-highs … It was WashU's 299th win all-time in the UAA … WashU topped the 90-point mark for the second time this season.
