No. 17 Women's Soccer Defeats No. 11 Chicago 1-0 in Season Finale

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 8, 2014 – Junior goalkeeper Amy French made six saves in her first start of the season to lead the 17-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 11 University of Chicago in the final regular season contest for both teams Saturday afternoon at Francis Field.

"It felt great to be back on the field. Its what I have been waiting for all season," said French, who posted her 12th career shutout and 20th career victory. "We prepared all week and everyone came together today. I am really proud of everyone on this team."

Washington U. improved its overall record to 13-3-2, and finished in a tie for fourth place in the UAA standings with a 3-3-1 mark. Chicago finished the regular season 13-4-1, and second in the UAA with a 4-2-1 record.

Sophomore Katie Chandler scored the game-winning goal for the Bears in the 48th minute after she took a pass from senior Lillie Toaspern and beat two defenders and fired a shot from 25 yards out past Chicago goalkeeper Mallory Morse to the far corner. The goal by Chandler was her ninth of the season, tying Toaspern for the team lead.

Chicago outshot Washington U. 15-8 for the game, but the Bears had the advantage in the second half 7-5. The Maroons also had the advantage on corner kicks 8-1.

Chicago took advantage of the wind in the first half outshooting the Bears 10-1. French made a tremendous save off a head ball from Katilin Price to keep the game tied in the 14th minute. She made another save in the 27th minute when she stopped a shot by Mia Calamari that went off the post.

French kept the game scoreless with four saves in the first half. The Maroons also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

With the Bears leading 1-0, French came up big again in the 70th minute when she deflected a shot by Madori Spiker over the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game.

The 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Selection Show will be streamed live on www.ncaa.com on Monday, Nov. 10, at Noon (CT). The Bears are seeking their ninth-straight NCAA Tournament selection.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Chicago, 14-11-2, and the Bears have won the last four meetings  … Toaspern moved into a tie for third place with career points with 113 … Washington U.'s senior class of Kaylin Balley, Tessa Delaney, Tessa Klumpp and Toaspern have helped the Bears to a 70-11-4 (.847) overall record in their four seasons, the winningest class in school history … The goal for Chandler was the 17th of her career, 13th most in school history.
