Klumpp's Goal Leads Bears Past No. 25 Illinois Wesleyan 1-0

Bloomington, Ill., Oct. 27, 2014 – Senior Tessa Klumpp scored her first goal of the season seven minutes into the second half to lead the No. 5-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at No. 25-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University Monday night in Bloomington, Ill.

Klumpp's goal came off a shot from 35 yards out that IWU goalkeeper Dana Jourdan misplayed and trickled into the back of the net. The goal for Klumpp was the second of her career, and first in two years.

"This is a really big win for us, with it being a regional match," said Klumpp. "It's an exciting weekend ahead for us, and hoping to get two more wins."

Washington U. improves to 12-1-2 with the win, while Illinois Wesleyan drops to 12-4-1.

Illinois Wesleyan outplayed WUSTL most of the first half, and had a 7-3 shot advantage. The Titans had the first scoring chance in the sixth minute when Sydney Fox fired a shot inside the box from the left side that sophomore Lizzy Crist got a hand on it.

The Bears were limited to one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes of play, and had their best chance in the 39th minute after a handball by IWU outside the box. Klumpp took the free kick for Washington U. that went over and right of the goal.

Illinois Wesleyan had another chance with less than 90 seconds to play after Crist misplayed a ball and then slipped on the wet grass, but Klumpp cleared it out to keep it 0-0 at half. Crist made six saves in the opening half.

The Titans registered the first three shots of the second half, but Washington U.'s defense locked down and allowed just one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes of play. Illinois Wesleyan had a 12-5 shot advantage, and each team had two corner kicks.

Crist improved to 10-1-2 with the shutout, while the seven saves were the second most in her career. The shutout for Washington U. was its 12th in 15 games.

Washington U. begins a three-game home stand to end the regular season against Brandeis University on Friday, Oct. 31. Game time is set for 8 p.m. at Francis Field.
