Summer Hutcheson has been the Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for Internal Operations and Administration at Washington University in St. Louis since January of 2019. With 20 years of experience in athletics, and Director of Athletics, Anthony J. Azama shared, “Summer has the unique combination as a former student-athlete and professional, with experiences as both a coach and administrator at Division I, Division III and NAIA institutions. She understands the needs of student-athletes at a prestigious academic university and has experience supporting coaches and staff across both the academic and athletic spectrum.”
Hutcheson serves on the department’s executive leadership team, which focuses on building a future vision for the Department of Athletics, and provides administrative oversight for nine sports programs – men and women’s cross country, golf, men and women’s indoor track and field, men and women’s outdoor track and field, softball, and women’s tennis. She also oversees Sports Medicine. She is the department’s primary administrator in the areas of internal operations, Title IX, student-athlete health and wellness, diversity and inclusivity, leadership development, and career planning programs. Hutcheson has been vital in the creation of Enrichment Services for Student-Athlete Development.
During the 2021-22 academic year, Hutcheson was one of just 22 selected for the NCAA Pathway Program. The Pathway Program spans the course of a year and provides participants with engagement opportunities through experiential learning wih the goal of preparing these individuals to attain positions as directors of athletics or conference commissioners. The program focuses on advancing participants to the top role in an athletics department or conference office, while building their skills to thrive in their current duties.
Hutcheson joined the WashU athletic administrative staff after most recently serving as the Associate Director of Athletics and SWA at Mount Holyoke College, a liberal arts college for women located in South Hadley, Mass. She spent five years with the Lyons and had primary oversight of student-athlete leadership development and programming; compliance and eligibility; admissions, recruiting and retention; and campus relations.
Some major achievements at Mount Holyoke include the creation of a new student-athlete code of conduct, alcohol and other drug policy, and trans student-athlete support plan in line with the campus policies, Title IX and NCAA requirements. She also helped coordinate the integration of Front Rush software with software from the admissions office to aid and streamline the recruiting process and information flow between athletics and admissions.
Prior to Mount Holyoke, Hutcheson worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for eight years as a Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics and as an assistant coach of both the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs. As the special assistant, she supervised the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) while also overseeing assigned budget areas and the overall management of the office.
Prior to her tenure at MIT, Hutcheson was an assistant cross country/track & field coach at the University of Tulsa (2004-05) and at Minot State University (2003-04), where the men’s cross country team won the NAIA national championship. She also spent three years at Faith Academy in Mobile, Ala. teaching English and public speaking as well as coaching the boy’s and girl’s track and field teams. In 2003, she led both squads to state championships.
A 2000 graduate of the University of Mobile with a B.A. in English, Hutcheson was an All-American in the mile run and a six-time Academic All-American in cross country and track & field. She earned an M.A. in Education from Minot State in 2010.
