St. Louis, Mo., August 31, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis cross country team opened its 2019 season with the Gabby Reuveni Intrasquad meet Saturday morning in Forest Park.
The initial race of the season is a shorter course than normal to kick start the year. The women ran 4.17K while the men's course was 6K, when typically the women race 6K events and the men 8K.
Sophomore Emma Walter led the way for the current roster of the No. 1-ranked Bears completing the distance in 15:22.9. She averaged a pace of 3:41.3 per kilometer. WashU alumna Aly Wayne finished with the fastest time overall, crossing the finish line in 14:44.3.
On the men's side, senior Ben Gersch took home the winning honors of the No. 2-ranked Bears roster. He completed the 6K course in 19:30.9 which averaged out to a 3:15.1 kilometer pace. WashU alumnus Matt Krueger was the overall winner when he finished in 19:12.4.
