Volleyball To Face No. 5 CMS in NCAA First Round

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 11, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team will take on No. 5 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College on Friday, Nov. 15, at 12:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament in the Windy City.  

WashU, after capturing third-place in the 2019 University Athletic Association Championship on Nov. 9, received an at-large bid to make their 33rd-straight program appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears finished the regular season 24-8 and 5-2 in University Athletic Association action. 

No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps carries in a 26-3 regular season record and is no stranger to WashU. The Bears and the Athenas faced off earlier this season at the WU Field House in the East to West Battle as then ranked No. 3 CMS collected a tough 3-1 (25-27, 26-24, 27-25, 25-20) win on Sept. 13.

- Defeated Millikin in five sets for the CCIW Championship for the automatic bid
- Had three named to the CCIW All-Tournament Team

Grinnell:26-4 overall, 7-2 MWC
- First trip to NCAA Tournament in the program's 46-year history 
- Claimed first-ever Midwest Conference Tournament title, beating St. Norbert in five sets.

Otterbein:25-6 overall, 7-2 OAC
- Received at-large bid after falling in Ohio Athletic Conference finals
- Making sixth overall NCAA tournament appearance, 2-5 record (.286)

UW-Whitewater:22-9 overall, 6-1 WIAC
- Received at-large bid after falling in five to UW-Stevens Point in WIAC title match
- 27th-straight appearance, 31stoverall in the NCAA Tournament, 48-29 record (.623)
