Waltham, Mass., September 22, 2019 – Washington University in St. Louis volleyball dropped a three-set match to No. 6-ranked University of Chicago Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Mass. to conclude the opening weekend of University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 2-1 record.
WashU fell to 11-5 on the year (2-1 UAA) while Chicago opened UAA play with a 3-0 start and improved to 13-1. The Bears hold a 41-8 record all-time against Chicago, but the Maroons have won three straight contests. WashU fell to 3-2 against Top-25 ranked programs in 2019.
First set: UC 25 – WashU 14
The Maroons dominated the first set en route to a 25-14 score. The Bears held a 2-1 advantage on a kill by freshman Alaina Bohrer but the remainder of the set was led by Chicago.
Second set: UC 25 – WashU 17
WashU held pace with the Maroons in the second set and King gave the Bears a 21-11 advantage with a kill assisted by junior Kirby Knapp.
Third set: UC 27 – WashU 25
Senior Hannah Turner tallied two kills to start the third set which gave WashU a 2-1 lead. The Bears and Maroons traded points and leads for several minutes of play. Following a 4-0 run which included two kills by King and a block by Turner and Lorenz, WashU took a 13-12 lead on a kill by sophomore Michaela Bach.
King and Turner provided kills later in the third frame to spark the Bears. Junior Tricia Brown had a service ace to tie the set at 22-all. King tied the match at 23-23 with a kill before Turner and Lorenz combined on a block to give WashU a 24-23 advantage.
Following a point by the Maroons, a service error by Chicago put the Bears ahead 25-24 but Chicago scored the final three points to claim the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
