St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 22, 2019 –The No. 24-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team outlasted Rhodes College to collect a 86-80 double overtime win on Friday afternoon at WU Field House.
The Bears improve to 2-1 on the season while the Lynx fall to 1-3.
WashU was paced by senior Kristina Schmelter's season-high 16 points, while sophomore Samantha Weaver chipped in with 15. Freshman Sammi Matoush had a career-high 14 points as fellow freshman Molly Gannon had a career-high 12 points, all from beyond the three-point line.
The squads traded leads throughout the first half. WashU held a 23-20 lead after the first quarter on a Hren three-pointer.
The Bears then pushed their lead to six at 34-28 on a three-pointer from Jackson at the 4:30 mark in the second quarter. The Lynx tied the game at 34-all a minute later and closed the half on a 10-5 run, including hitting three last second free-throws.
In the third quarter, the Bears struggled to get their offense going, as the Lynx seemed to answer every bucket with one of their own.
The Lynx pushed their lead out to nine at 70-61 at the 3:28 mark in the fourth quarter. The Bears got a big three-point play by Weaver, who hit a layup drawing the foul and making the free throw, to switch the momentum.
Gannon nailed a three pointer while Weaver hit two more buckets, including the game-tying layup with less than a second left in the game to force overtime.
In the extra period, Weaver got the Bears on the board first with a jumper, followed by a Schmelter layup, and two Matoush free throws. The Lynx hit a three-pointer to get within one, at 77-76 with 1:36 left. Schmelter chipped in another bucket as Matoush scored five points, including three from the charity stripe before Weaver hit two free throws of her own to seal the Bears' victory.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 30, when they host the Midwest Challenge at WU Field House. WashU will host No. 10 DePauw for a 4 p.m. tip on Saturday, after Illinois Wesleyan and Rose-Hulman battle at 2 p.m.
