Women’s Basketball Preview – at Loras College Tip-off Classic

Week 1 Notes

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 14, 2019 –The No. 24-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team begins its 40th season by traveling to Dubuque, Iowa, for its 2019-20 season opener against Loras College on Friday, Nov. 15 as part of the Loras College Tip-Off Classic. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. 

The Bears will either play No. 17 UW-Oshkosh or Augustana in either the consolation game at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 or the championship contest at 4 p.m.

SCOUTING LORAS COLLEGE – The Duhawks opened the season with a 94-59 victory at Elmhurst College on Nov. 9. Senior Macenzie Kraemer paced Loras with 25 points, with three three-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the line. Loras was selected to finish second in the American Rivers Conference. 

THE SERIES – WashU has a 4-2 series advantage over Loras. The Duhawks have won the last two meetings, including a 57-46 win at the WU Field House last season on Dec. 16, 2018. 

SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH - The 2018-19 defending WIAC Champion came in as the No. 17 team on the D3hoops.compreseason poll. The Titans opened the season with a 68-54 win over Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Nov. 11. Junior Leah Porath led the Titans with 19 points and nine rebounds while senior Olivia Campbell had 15 points and eight rebounds in the win. 

THE SERIES- WashU holds a 5-3 series record over UW-Oshkosh. The Bears won the last meeting 68-56 on March 10, 2017, in the NCAA Sectional Final at the WU Field House. 

SCOUTING AUGUSTANA- Augustana went 1-1 at the Hyatt Place Tournament, falling to Benedictine 74-69 to open the season on Nov. 8, then bounced back with a 59-58 win over Luther on Nov. 9. Justice Deell is averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds in 28.5 minutes through two games.

THE SERIES - The Bears hold a 8-2 series record over the Vikings. WashU won the last game between the programs 77-53 on  Dec. 6, 2013 in the McWilliams Classic at the WU Field House. 

A LOOK BACK AT 2018-19 – WashU finished the season 22-7 and 13-1 in UAA play. The Bears fell to No. 1 Thomas More 87-72 in the NCAA Sectional Final on March 9. Head Coach Randi Henderson and her coaching staff were named UAA Staff of the Year as senior forward Madeline Homoly collected UAA First-Team honors. 

BEAR TRACKS – WashU returns seven letterwinners and four student-athletes that averaged 10 minutes of action during the 2018-19 season. Senior post player Kristina Schmelter returns for the Bears after averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 17.4 minutes of action in the 2018-19 season.

- WashU checked in as No. 24 program in the D3Hoops.compreseason poll and at No. 16 in the WBCA Top-25 Coaches Poll on Oct. 31. 

UP NEXT – WashU will open the 2019-20 home slate on Friday, Nov. 22 when Rhodes heads to the Field House for a 3 p.m. tip.
