Kalamazoo, Mich., Oct. 5, 2019 – Junior Daniel Li continued his run in the singles bracket with a pair of wins over seeded players to highlight day two of the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships held at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Li defeated No. 8 seed Jeremy Yuan of Chicago 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16 and then rolled past No. 9 seed Daniel Felipe Gomez Espinel of Principia 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He takes on James Hooper of Case Western Reserve Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (ET) in the semis. Hooper upset No. 1 seed and junior Ethan Hillis 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Benjamin van der Sman won his round of 16 match over No. 4 seed Erik Kerrigan of Chicago 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, before falling to No. 7 seed Matthew Chen of Case Western Reserve 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarters.
Senior Bernardo Neves, the No. 5 seed, was upset by Joshua Xu of Chicago 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in his round of 16 match Saturday.
In doubles, the No. 4 seeded team of Neves and van der Sman posted a pair of wins to advance to the semifinals. The duo defeated Jose Larrea and Kryus Tsai of Calvin 8-4 in the round of 16 and then defeated Peter Ale and Sriram Sugulmaran of Augustana 8-3 in the quarters.
The duo takes on No. 5 seed Matthew Chen and Hopper of Case Western Reserve Sunday at 9 a.m. (ET).
