Greenville, Ill., Sept. 24, 2018 – Senior Ryan Sproule scored a pair of first-half goals and younger brother Will Sproule added an insurance goal in the second half to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 5-0 win at Greenville University Monday in Greenville, Ill.
The Sproule brothers combined for eight points in the victory – five by Ryan and three by Will.
WashU extended its winning streak to four matches and improved its overall record to 4-3, while Greenville had its seven-match win streak snapped and fell to 7-2.
Each team recorded seven shots in the opening half, but it WashU that found the back of the net twice.
He found the back of the net again just before half in the 42ndminute scoring from the top of the box off a cross from sophomore Andrew Brunetti.
A give and go from Ryan Sproule to Will Sproule in the 54thminute made it 3-0, and then the Bears added an insurance goal in the 65thminute by freshman Aidan Ryan to round out the scoring. Junior Makio Yamamato and Will Sproule were credited with a double assist off the corner kick goal.
Senior Marc VandenBerg rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 76thminute.
WashU outshot Greenville 11-8 and had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU opens University Athletic Association (UAA) play against No. 7-ranked Emory University (7-0) Saturday, Game time is set for 11 a.m.
