Men's Basketball Preview - 36th Annual Lopata Classic

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 19, 2019 – The No. 7-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team hosts the 36th Annual Lopata Classic on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 22-23, at the WU Field House.

The Bears take on Coe Friday at 7 p.m., while Whitworth and Wisconsin-Eau Claire take the court at 5 p.m. The third-place contest is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship game at 7 p.m.

THE SERIES – WashU leads the all-time series with Coe 5-0, and the teams are meeting for the first time since the 2014-15 season. WashU and Whitworth have split two all-time meetings, while WashU and leads the all-time series with UW-Eau Claire 2-1.

LOPATA CLASSIC – WashU has an all-time record of 62-8 (.886) in the Lopata Classic, and have won the tournament championship 24 times. The Bears won 35-straight games from 1999-2016, including 14-consecutive titles.

HARDY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN – Sophomore forward Justin Hardy was named to the 2019-20 Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Team. Hardy started all 25 games and was second on the squad averaging 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game a year ago. He was named to the 2019 DIII News All-Freshman Team, and picked up UAA Rookie of the Year honors.

BEAR TRACKS – Hardy has scored in double figures in 22 of 28 games played in his career, including a season-high 25 in a 90-86 win at UW-Whitewater Nov. 16.

– Junior guard Jack Nolan is 85-of-92 (92.4 percent) in his three-year career from the free-throw line. Nolan is chasing his uncle Gene (1992-96), WashU's all-time leader in free-throw percentage, at 85.7 (281-328).

– Hardy (22.0, second) and Nolan (20.0, fourth) both rank in the top-five in the league in scoring.

– Senior center Hank Hunter (8.0, third) and Hardy (7.7, fourth) are in the top-five in rebounding.
