St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 14, 2019 – Washington University in St. Louis had five student-athletes named to the 2019 NCAA Division III Academic All-District Five Football Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Senior defensive back Matt Bernstein, sophomore linebacker John Christensen, senior punter Johnny Davidson, senior running back John Fisher and junior specialist Will Hurley each took home the honor for WashU.
Bernstein has 23 tackles and one interception in five games this season. He made a season-high 11 tackles and recorded his first career interception vs. No. 5 North Central (9/21). Bernstein has recorded 102 career tackles in 28 games played. A two-time Academic All-University Athletic Association (UAA) and All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) selection, Bernstein has a 3.81 grade point average while majoring in finance and accounting.
Christensen leads the team and is ninth in the CCIW with 63 tackles. He had a career-high 16 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a sack and his first career interception in a 21-0 win at Illinois Wesleyan on Oct. 26. Christensen was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Oct. 29, and also earned CCIW and UAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. An Academic All-UAA and All-CCIW selection, Christensen has a 3.97 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering.
Davidson leads the CCIW and ranks 15th in NCAA Division III in punting average at 40.4. He has punted 52 times this season for 2,100 yards, with a long of 59 yards and 13 inside the 20. Davidson was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Nov. 12, and was also the UAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week on Oct. 28. He was a 2019 Campbell Trophy Semifinalist and earned Academic All-UAA and All-CCIW honors. Davidson has a 3.61 GPA while majoring in finance and accounting.
Fisher, who earned the honor for the third-straight year, leads the team in rushing with 338 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for a season-high 103 yards and a TD at Carthage on Sept. 28. Fisher has run for 1,420 yards and 10 touchdowns in 27 career games. A two-time Academic All-UAA and Academic All-CCIW selection, he has a 3.97 GPA while majoring in finance and accounting.
Hurley is the holder for extra points and field goals, and is also on punt return, kickoff and punt teams. He has returned blocked punts for touchdowns vs. No. 5 Wheaton (10/19) and Augustana (11/2), and was the holder for single-game school record four field goals vs. Elmhurst (10/12). A two-time Academic All-CCIW and 2019 Academic All-UAA honoree, Hurley has a 3.97 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering.
To be eligible for nomination to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must be a starter or an important reserve.
All five student-athletes are now eligible to be selected to the Academic All-America Team, announced Dec. 10.
