Participants/Teams
Forming a team
A team can be made of any combination of students or  Sumers Rec Center members. Each team must designate a captain who will be the team spokesperson, communication liaison with the RecSports office and responsible for the signing up, scheduling, and eligibility requirements of team members. A team captain does not have to attend every game, a speaking captain can be designated for each game in these instances.

Each sport/activity will have a minimum number of people on a roster to be able register and to play a game. If a team cannot find enough players there are "free agents" that a captain can draft onto their team. A student can be added to a roster throughout the regular season and up until the semifinal game of playoffs.

Teams are often made up of people from the same Res College, program cohort, affinity group, or new friends made throughout your time at WashU. A student can be added to a roster throughout the regular season and until the semifinal game of playoffs.

Team captains can invite members to their team by clicking the "Invite Members" link on the team roster page. Any invited members must accept the invitation to join to the team by creating their profile. If a potential teammate is already a member of DSE, search for their email, and invite them.

If a potential teammate hasn't yet become a member of DSE, you can "Invite by Email" and input their email address. If a teammate has a DSE account they can also be added on-site before their first game.

How many teams can I play on?
A participant may play on one Open or Women's team and one CoRec team. The division does not matter, each participant is only able to play on one team in Open/Women's league and one team in CoRec. During the regular season we will have a nomad rule in place to help teams avoid forfeits - anyone may play on a team for a game during the regular season to help get a team to the number needed to play the match. Nomads may not be used if a team has subs. During playoffs the nomad rule is off.

The RecSport staff has the ability to move a team from the Just For Fun division to Competitive either during the regular season or for playoffs.

Free agents
Signing up as a free agent is how a student, who does not have a team in a specific sport or activity but wants to play, can try to find a team. Once you register as a free agent, teams can request to add you to their team. When there are enough free agents a team may be formed from just free agents by the RecSports office. If you are not drafted initially, you are able to join any team throughout the entire season until the semifinals of playoffs.

To sign up as a free agent:

1. Log in or create an account using your WashU email at DSE.
2. Select a sport, then a league for that sport.
3. Click on "Join As A Free Agent" in as many divisions as you choose.
4. Provide any additional information about yourself you'd like a team to know

Practice time
IM teams do not have set practices. If a team chooses to practice for fun they must find the time and space – there are no reservations available for IM team practices.
Mudd Field is available for recreation play when not in use by RecSports, Varsity Athletics, or a separate reservation.

Uniforms/jerseys
RecSports will provide pinnies or jerseys for each activity in which color differentiation needs to be made. A team may still make their own T-shirts or coordinate what color to wear for their games. If a team chooses to do this, all team members must be wearing the same color. The graphics and wording on team shirts must be appropriate. If not, pinnies will be required to be worn by that team.
  • Shirts must be worn underneath the pinnies at all times.
  • Flag football requires bottoms with no pockets or zippers to play. Specific guidelines can be seen in sport rules.

Sporting Behavior
In order to maintain the spirit of Intramural Sports and provide a safe, fun atmosphere for WashU students, poor behavior is not tolerated by participants, spectators or anyone designated as a coach.

In cases of verbal abuse or other forms of conduct constituting harassment, whether directed at an official, staff member, another participant, or a spectator, the RecSports staff will take action to card, give technicals or eject the offending participant or spectator from the game and suspend the participant or spectator from competition for a length of time determined by the RecSports Staff. When a participant receives a red card and/or ejection from a game, they are required to leave the playing area, sight and sound, within 1 minute or the game will be forfeited. Participant and spectator actions are subject to this standard before, during, and after the intramural sport, event or contest.

If the level of bad sporting behavior and/or dangerous play in a game jeopardizes the safety and well-being of game participants or officials, a RecSports Staff member may terminate the game. In this event the teams, team captains, and all players may be suspended from future Intramural Sports events.

Team members and team captains are also responsible for the behavior and sporting behavior of their team's spectators. RecSports staff have the authority to impose penalties against the team and/or team captain for improper behavior or poor sporting behavior of spectators. Unaffiliated spectators are also subject to ejection from the facility for inappropriate behavior, as determined by RecSports staff.

Every game or activity receives a Sportsmanship rating designated by the on staff Intramural Supervisor. Consistent ratings below a 3 can result in team not being eligible for playoffs.

4=Extremely good sporting behavior, extreme cooperation by all. 0 cards/technicals.
3=No incidence of poor sporting behavior. 1 yellow card/technical or sportsmanship docked by supervisor's discretion.
2=Average; rare, minor infractions. 2 yellow cards/technicals on separate players; forfeit.
1=Unnecessary roughness; players ejected, forfeits a game. 1 Red card/ejection or 2 yellows/technicals on same player.
0=Disregards officials' warnings; disorderly spectators; participants safety is jeopardized. Game is forfeited due to poor sporting behavior, 2 red cards on separate players or 3 yellow cards on separate players.
