ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team finished in sixth place at the UAA Championships after falling to No. 20 in the fifth-place match, 4-3, on Saturday morning.
Doubles
Brandeis took an early lead, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
No 8 senior
Colin Fox and first-year
Jeremy Sieben beat Oliver Lorenz and Aidan Wang-Fan 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore
Drew Koval and junior
Nathan Tam fell to Daniel Shemest and Huasen Dong 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Senior
Colin Scruggs and first-year
Spencer Yamamoto lost to Pierce Garbett and Jiahe Wang 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Singles
Scruggs fell to Shemest 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to put Brandeis ahead 2-0. Koval won the next first match for the Bears, beating Dong 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles for a 2-1 match.
Sophomore
Avi Mahajan made it an even 2-2 match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lorenz at No. 4 singles. Fox gave the Bears a 3-2 edge with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Muaz Malik at No. 3 singles.
Sieben fell to Garbett 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles to make it an even 3-3 match.
Brandeis went on to clinch the match as Wang-Fan defeated Tam 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The Bears will now await their NCAA Championship fate. The team selections will be announced on May 4 at 12:30 p.m. ET. The individual selections will be announced via press release on May 6.
