No. 15 WashU Men's Tennis Drops Pair To Open Spring Break Trip In Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team kicked off their annual Spring Break trip on Monday with a pair of matches. The Bears opened up the trip by taking on No. 14 Trinity (TX) before facing Div. II St. Mary's (TX). Due to weather in the San Antonio area, the matches were delayed and completed later on Monday evening.

Trinity 4, WashU 3
All three doubles matches were close, with the Tigers claiming the doubles point. Trinity opened with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to go up 1-0.

The duo of seniors Eric Kuo and Colin Scruggs was able to close out doubles with a 7-6 (5) win at No. 2.

WashU leveled up the match to start singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win by junior Nathan Tam at No. 6. Scruggs got his second win of the day next with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over No. 20 Jared Perry at No. 2 singles.

The Tigers then tied the match up themselves, 2-2, with a three-set win at No. 3. Trinity took the lead for good with a three-set win at No. 4 before clinching the match with a win at No. 5 singles. Kuo closed out his match at No. 1 with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-2 win.

St. Mary's 4, WashU 1
The Bears bounced back on the day to start their match with the Rattlers. After St. Mary's claimed the No. 3 doubles match, sophomore Drew Koval and Tam picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

First-year Jeremy Sieben and senior Colin Fox clinched the doubles point with their 7-6 (5) win at the top spot for the 1-0 WashU lead.

The Rattlers responded with a strong push in singles, claiming wins at No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 to complete the comeback and claim the match 4-1. The remaining matches at No. 4 and 5 went unfinished due to the lateness of the match on Monday evening.

WashU is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 11, when they face No. 9 Swarthmore at St. Stephen's HS in Austin, Texas. The first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
