NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team got its first look at the course it will compete on later this fall at the NCAA Championships at the Running of the Cows Meet on Saturday morning.
Both this meet and the national championship will be hosted by Carleton.
Navy Championship Race
WashU finished in sixth place among the 35 teams competing, finishing with 195 points.
No. 5 Wartburg (110 points) finished first, with No. 3 Johns Hopkins (123 points) and No. 1 Wis.-La Crosse (144 points) finishing second and third, respectively. No. 9 Wis.-Stevens Point (182 points) and No. 8 RPI (189 points) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Max Sudrzynski was first for WashU in a time of 24:52.3, finishing in 14th place. Sophomore Charlie Houck was the next Bear to cross the finish line in 21st place with a time of 25:02.7.
Junior Sean Green (25:15.8), first-year Toby Wong (25:18.0), and junior Ben Lorenz (25:26.0) finished in 44th, 49th, and 68th place, respectively, to close out the scoring for WashU.
Open Race
In the final race of the day, WashU finished in second place as a team with 59 points, with Wis.-La Crosse winning with 21 points.
UWSP was third with 67 points, No. 17 Hope was fourth with 114 points, and No. 23 St. Olaf rounded out the top five with 184 points.
Sophomore Mateo Gros-Slovinsky was the first WashU runner to finish in ninth place with a time of 26:17.7. He began a string of four consecutive finishes for the Bears as first-year Freddie van der Velden (26:18.7), senior Will Liu (26:19.2), and first-year Ryan Lien (26:22.2) finished in 10th, 11th, and 12th place, respectively.
Sophomore Charlie Glatz closed out the scoring for the Bears in 17th place with a time of 26:31.7.
WashU is back on the course in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 17, when it travels to Rock Island, Ill., for the Augie Inter Regional hosted by Augustana at the Saukie Golf Course.
