No. 12 Softball Completes Series Sweep of Brandeis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis softball team completed the series sweep of Brandeis on Sunday morning with an 8-0 win in five innings. The Bears are now 26-5 on the season with an 11-1 mark in UAA play.

The Bears posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Erin Reardon drew a leadoff walk and moved forward on a grounder from senior Brooke Capparelli. Senior Natalia Pilpil and junior Sydney Schneider both drew walks, loading the bases. Sophomore Kennedy Grippo hit a bases-clearing double to left center, just shy of going out of the park, putting WashU ahead 3-0.

WashU added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Alexa Hanish led off with a single up the middle and senior Maggie Baumstark drew a walk. Reardon laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base. Capparelli singled through the left side to score Hanish for the first run of the inning, and Baumstark stole home to put the Bears ahead 5-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, with one out, Schneider drew a walk, and Grippo reached on a fielder's choice to short before advancing on a wild pitch. First-year Harper Nix singled up the middle, scoring Grippo for a 6-0 lead.

Baumstark led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. First-year Emma Dow was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Jamie Cendana drew a walk to load the bases, prompting a Brandeis pitching change. Pilpil hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Baumstark and Dow for an 8-0 game.

Grippo finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs and one run scored. Nix was 1-for-2 with one RBI, and Hanish was 1-for-2 with one run scored. Baumstark went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and a walk.

Senior Jordan Rossi pitched a one-hit game in the circle, going all five innings with two strikeouts.

The Bears hit the road next weekend for a three-game series at Carnegie Mellon, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET. WashU closes out the regular season at home against Emory on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10.
