ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing in its first match outdoors this spring, the No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team picked up a quick 7-0 win over Augustana on Sunday afternoon on the Tao Tennis Courts.
The Bears won two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point before sweeping through singles for the win.
In doubles, the team of seniors Pato Garcia Muriel and Stefan Hester made quick work at the top spot with a 6-1 win. Fellow senior Scott Yamamoto paired up with first-year Drew Koval for an identical 6-1 win at number three doubles. The two wins gave the Bears the doubles point, despite dropping a 6-4 match at number two.
All but one of the singles matches went two sets. Junior Colin Fox was off the court first with a 6-1, 6-0 win at number six. Hester, despite the set scores, played a quick match for a win at number three, 6-3, 6-2, putting the Bears ahead 3-0.
No. 33 Colin Scruggs clinched the match for WashU with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number two singles. Both senior Eric Kuo and Koval followed up quickly after with straight-set wins, extending the winning score to 6-0.
Junior Case Fagan played a long, tough first set at number five singles that saw two matches finish before he dropped his first set 7-6 (5). With the match secured, Fagan pushed through the second set to earn a split, forcing a match tiebreak in lieu of a full third set. A quick tiebreak saw Fagan come away with a 10-5 score in the tiebreak for the win.
WashU will have one week to prepare and travel for its annual spring break trip, this year to Claremont and Irvine, California. The Bears kick off the trip with a match at No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 4 p.m. PT (6 p.m. CT).
