Softball Splits With Emory on Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis split with Emory on Saturday afternoon in a UAA doubleheader. The Bears are now 24-10 with a 13-5 mark in conference play.
 
Game 1: WashU 4, Emory 3
The Eagles got on the board first as Page Nellis hit a lead-off homer over the right field fence in the top of the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears responded in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up 1-1. Natalia Pilpil led off with a double to left center and Payton Irwin doubled to right center to score Pilpil to even things out.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Emory's Ellie Zerr and Ella Hoyle hit back-to-back homeruns to make it a 3-1 game for the Eagles.
 
WashU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor Geluck led off with a single up the middle and Irwin followed with a bunt single. Ashley Kennedy drilled a triple to right field, scoring Geluck and Irwin to tie things up at three runs apiece. Kennedy scored the go-ahead run, drove in by Sydney Schneider, to take a 4-3 lead.
 
Kennedy finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored and Irwin was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
Jamie Burgasser earned the win in the circle, pitching 1.2 innings with no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. She improves to 7-2 on the season.
 
Game 2: Emory 2, WashU 1
Emory scored first again, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Zerr singled to right center and Hoyle singled to left field. Grace Cooper singled through the right side to load the bases and Kayla Lang was hit by a pitch to bring in Zerr for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears tied things up in the bottom of the second inning. Irwin led off with a double to left and Brooke Capparelli drew a two-out walk and Maggie Baumstark singled down the left line to score Irwin for a 1-1 game.
 
The Eagles took a lead in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Natalie Swift singled through the left side and then stole second. Ashley Chu singled up the middle to put runners on the corners and then stole second. Nellis singled to center and moved to second on the throw, scoring Swift for a 2-1 edge.
 
Baumstark was 1-for-3 with one RBI while Irwin went 1-for-2 with one run scored. Schneider finished 1-for-2 and Grippo was 1-for-1.
 
Burgasser took the loss in the circle, pitching four innings with seven hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
 
The Bears close out the series against Emory tomorrow morning. The team will continue Friday's game which was halted due to weather at 10 a.m., followed by the final game of the series directly after that.
