ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a pair of games to Wartburg and Spalding on Saturday afternoon at home. The Bears are now 9-5 on the season.
Game 1: Wartburg 4, WashU 0
Wartburg put up the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Reagan Hassel drew a one-out walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaylie Springer reached base on a fielder's choice and Hassel was safe at third base. Springer got into a rundown between second and first base, allowing Hassel to steal home for the 1-0 lead.
Wartburg added two more in the top of the fourth inning to go up 3-0. Lili Alvarado led off with a single to short and advanced on a Sydney Fellows ground out. Ella Link drilled a single down the left field line to score Alvarado for the first run of the inning. Tarah Wehde followed with a double down the left field line to score link for the two-run edge.
The Knights scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Jenna Wiebenga singled up the middle and then Ally Happ came on to run for her and stole second. Reegan deputy drew a walk and Reagan Hassel singled up the middle to score Happ for the 4-0 lead.
Erin Reardon finished 2-for-3 while
Brooke Capparelli went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Maria Brooks took her first loss of the season, pitching a complete game with four earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
Game 2: Spalding 8, WashU 7
The Bears put up three runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Capparelli doubled to left center.
Maggie Baumstark followed with a single to right field and advanced to second on the throw, putting two runners in scoring position. Reardon singled to center, scoring both Capparelli and Baumstark.
Olivia Craycraft singled through the left side and
Kennedy Grippo followed with a single through the left side to bring in Reardon to give WashU the 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bears added four more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Baumstark led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Reardon. Craycraft doubled through the right side to score Baumstark for the first run of the inning.
Grippo grounded out to short to move Craycraft to third and a
Taylor Geluck double to left scored Craycraft.
Kristina Donaldson then drove in Geluck with a single up the middle.
Alexa Hanish brought in the final run of the inning with a single to right center, scoring Donaldson.
Spalding rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Brooklyn Nolot led off with a single to left center and Carsyn Sidebottom singled through the left side. Karlee Terral singled to short to load the bases and Morgan Gambrell singled up the middle to score Nolot.
Grayce Marcum singled to right to bring in Sidebottom and Bella Velez singled up the middle to score Terral and prompt a pitching change for the Bears as
Emma Urban replaced
Hattie Bond. Madison Loechle singled to right to score Riley Wilkins, who came on to run for Gambrell, and Marcum.
Allison Nell singled to third to load the bases again and Hayleigh Gnagie reached on a fielder's choice. Sidebottom singled to second base to score Loechle and Terral singled to second to bring in Nell to tie the game 7-7.
Spalding took a 8-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Marcum doubled to left center and advanced to third on a Velez fly to left. Marcum went on to score on a passed ball for the one-run lead.
Reardon finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored while Craycraft went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Capparelli finished 1-for-2 and Baumstark was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Urban took the loss in the circle, pitching two innings and allowing three runs.
The Bears will look to rebound tomorrow with two more games against Wartburg and Spalding at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
