No. 6 Men's Swimmng and Diving Tops Rhodes, 215-73

St. Louis, Mo.
– The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming and diving team began the 2023 portion of its schedule with a 215-73 win over Rhodes College at home.
 
Swimming
The day opened with first and second place finishes in the 200 medley relay. The team of Kyle Wolford, Justin Rockaway, Nicolas Gomez and Austin Bick won the field in 1:34.85 while the group of Alexander McCormick, Nathan Lin, Mason Rhode and Kai Garren finished second in 1:35.71.
 
Senior Mason Kelber won the field in the 1,650 freestyle by nearly 24 seconds, swimming to a time of 15:46.06. Sophomore Jeffrey Forbes placed third in 16:32.98 while first-year Orluke Borjigin took fourth in 16:46.20.
 
The Bears swept the top six spots in the 200 freestyle, led by first-year Ethan Feng who raced to a time of 1:41.99. Junior Mark Lipkin took second in 1:43.57 while sophomore Danny Sibley finished third with a time of 1:43.78.
 
WashU continued to dominate, claiming the top three spots in the 50 backstroke, led by Kyle Wolford's first-place time of 24.18. McCormick came in second with a time of 24.52 and first-year Ryan Wood finished third in 25.86.
 
Rockaway won the 50 breast, racing to a time of 26.67, following by Lin in second place with a time of 27.02.
 
WashU earned the top five spots in the 100 butterfly, led by Gomez who finished in 52.12. First-year Matthew Walker took second with a time of 52.54 and first-year Andy Zhu finished third in 53.07.
 
Another Bear claimed a top spot, this time sophomore Kai Garren won the 50 freestyle in 21.51. Bick took third in 22.52 while Pace Edwards took fourth in 22.73.
 
Feng won his second race of the day, claiming the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.57. Garren took second in 48.02 while Lipkin finished third with a time of 48.17.
 
McCormick won the 100 backstroke, racing to a time of 51.41. Wood followed in second with a time of 54.56 and senior Nolan Shields took fourth in 56.07.
 
Rockaway claimed his second win of the day in the 100 breast, racing to a first-place time of 58.37. Lin took second in 59.41 while Zhu claimed third with a time of 1:00.50.
 
The 500 freestyle was the lone swimming race of the day that the Bears did not win, as Rhodes' Daniel Snyder won in 4:43.64. First-year Matthew Giardinelli took second with a time of 4:48.55 and sophomore Ryan Hillery finished third in 4:49.59.
 
Senior Jonathan Ma won the 50 butterfly, racing to a time of 22.91. Gomez finished second with a time of 23.44 while Bick took third in 23.51.
 
Feng won his third race of the day in the 100 IM, swimming to a time of 52.37. Lin claimed second in 53.56 while McCormick finished third in 53.64.
 
 
The Bears closed out the day with the top two spots in the 200 freestyle, led by the team of Bick, Rockaway, Garren and Gomez in first with a time of 1:25.35. The group of Lipkin, Edwards, Kelber and Sibley finished second in 1:26.59.
 
Diving
Elliot Polikowski finished second on the 1-meter, racking up 170.85 points. Polikowski also took second on the 3-meter, earning 170.65 points.
 
The Bears are back home on Friday with a meet against UMSL at 5 p.m.
