Fenton, Mo., Sept. 28, 2016 – The No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 5-1 victory at Webster University in non-conference action Wednesday at St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
WashU improved its overall record to 7-1-1, while Webster fell to 4-5-1.
It took WashU just seven minutes to gain the advantage after freshman Taylor Cohen flicked a ball to senior Katie Chandler who fired a shot just outside the 18 to the far corner. The goal for Chandler was her first of the season and 27th of career.
In the 31st minute, freshman Jesse Rubin scored from outside the 18 after her shot went off the crossbar and into the back of the net. The goal was her team-leading third of the season.
It took the Bears less than four minutes into the half to push the lead to 3-0. WashU played a short corner to sophomore Jessica Kovach, who sent the ball through the box to senior Megan Nicklay, who finished it off with a shot inside the six.
Junior Kelly Von Zup made it 4-0 in the 64th minute after she scored off a free kick just outside the 18. The goal for Von Zup was the first of her career. Cohen rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a goal in the 78th minute.
WashU outshot Webster 37-7 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU opens University Athletic Association (UAA) play Saturday, Oct. 1, at University of Rochester. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (ET) in Rochester, N.Y.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Webster, 16-0-1, and the Bears have won the last 15 meetings between the two teams … Head coach Jim Conlon picked up win number 140 at WashU, two shy of the all-time mark … The Bears have outscored their opponents 24-2 this season … Crist lowered her school-record goals against average to 0.38.
