Titles for Van Cleave & Lum Highlight UAA S&D Championship Finale

Chicago, Ill., Feb. 16, 2019 – Senior Kevin Van Cleave won a University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championship event title for the third straight night and senior Brandon Lum won an event title for the fourth consecutive year as the No. 6-ranked WashU men finished second overall and the No. 9-ranked WashU women placed fourth.

Van Cleave was awarded the UAA men's swimmer of the year after swimming to seven all-UAA finishes. During Saturday's finale he posted the top time in the 200 breaststroke after winning the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM event titles Thursday and Friday.

The Bears men scored 459 points Saturday to tie for the top total, while combining for 1,454.5 points overall to place second. The WashU women scored 1,159 points.

MEN

Van Cleave added a third event title by posting a winning time of 2:00.49 in the 200 breaststroke. It was a season-best time and NCAA Division III B Cut time. Van Cleave previously swam to the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM event titles Thursday and Friday. Five Bears swam to B Cut times in the 200 breaststroke: freshman Kevin Hao (2:02.43), freshman Nathan Katz (2:03.21), junior Simon Deshusses (2:03.36 in prelims) and Max Cardwell (2:04.80 in prelims).

For the fourth consecutive season, Lum topped the field in 200 butterfly. He won Saturday's final with a time of 1:47.71 which was nearly two seconds faster than the runner-up.

Van Cleave also anchored the Bears 400 freestyle relay and helped push the Bears to second place with one of the fastest closing legs of the race, 44.83. Junior Chase Van Patten, senior Andrew Pek and freshman Barclay Dale swam the opening three legs in less than 45.75 seconds.

Van Patten also earned all-UAA honors in the 100 freestyle by touching the wall in 45.40 for third place overall.

WOMEN

Senior Lauren Sapp, junior Mollie Seidner, sophomore Sabrina Baxamusa and junior Catherine Cowin had an excellent finish the Bears four-day championship meet. They all posted times under 52 seconds en route to placing second overall with a season-best and B Cut time of 3:26.48.

Also swimming to B Cut times for the Bears Saturday were Seidner (51.45) and Sapp (51.74) in the 100 freestyle and junior Stephanie Li (2:20.90) in the 200 breaststroke.
