WashU S&D Finishes Friday with 15 More B Cut TImes

Granville, Ill./Wheaton, Ill., Nov. 30, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving team totaled 15 NCAA Division III B cut times as the Bears competed at multiple competitions tallying 14 at the Denison Invite and one at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invite on Friday.

The No. 5-ranked WashU men totaled 13 B cut times, including 12 at the Denison Invite where the Bears are in third place with 1,035 points out of five teams. The Bears men competing at Wheaton are also in third place with 373 points.

The No. 9-ranked WashU women are in fifth place with 748 points at Denison, while the Bears in Wheaton are in third place with 414 points.

MEN
Senior Andrew Pek had the highest individual placement in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.69 in the final to place second overall. His prelims time of 48.54 is the top mark in Division III this season, as the only swimmer to place ahead of Pek was from Division II Wayne State. Senior Brandon Lum also swam to a B cut time and placed fourth with a time of 49.16.

Senior Kevin Van Cleave finished third in the 100 breaststroke touching the wall in 55.60. Sophomore Matthew Yang also scored a B cut time, finishing in 55.82 in prelims.

Junior Peyton Wilson placed third overall with Division III's third fastest time this season in the 100 backstroke. He ended in 49.09, and was also joined by junior Jerry Chen (49.47) and freshman Barclay Dale (49.89) with B cut times in the event.

Chen, Van Cleave, Pek and Wilson scored a B cut finish in the 200 medley relay (1:30.10). The group placed sixth overall.

Senior Jordan Wheeler (3:58.21) and freshmen Nathan Katz (3:58.67) and Kevin Hao (3:59.56) finished the 400 IM with B cut standards met. Junior Chase Van Patten also scored a B cut time in the 200 freestyle during prelims with a time of 1:40.03.

Freshman Sam Mahoney was the lone Bear to score a B cut time at the Wheaton Invite, posting a time of 1:50.22 in the 200 butterfly.

WOMEN

Freshman Grace Carey, junior Stephanie Li, senior Lauren Sapp and junior Mollie Seidner placed sixth in the 200 medley relay. The group finished more than a half of a second under the B cut standard, finishing the race in 1:44.78.

Sophomore Ella Needler placed sixth overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.37. She finished in a faster 56.81 and earned a time under the B cut standard in the process.

Also scoring top-7 finishes for the women were Carey, freshman Abby Wilson, sophomore Lucy Meehan and senior Brooke Ivey in the 800 freestyle relay (fifth – 7:50.04) and Sapp in the 200 freestyle (seventh – 1:53.20).
