Football Plays First Road Game Saturday at Wartburg

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 19, 2017 – Washington University in St. Louis (1-2, 0-1 UAA) plays its first road game of the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Wartburg College (2-0, 1-0 IIAC). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa. The Bears are coming off a 40-21 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sept. 16 at home.

THE SERIES – The teams are meeting for the first time in school history.

THE COACHES – Head coach Larry Kindbom (Kalamazoo, 1974) is in his 29th season at WashU, with an overall record of 175-110 (.614). His 175 wins rank him as the all-time winningest coach at WashU. Overall, Kindbom ranks 13th in active NCAA coaches with a 203-140-1 (.593) record in 35 seasons as a college football coach.

Wartburg head coach Rick Willis (Cornell, 1988) is 157-40 (.797) in 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach, all of which have come at Wartburg. Willis, who also serves as the Director of Athletics, has led the Knights to eight Iowa Conference championships and eight NCAA appearances. His 157 wins are the most in program history, while his winning percentage ranks seventh-best in the nation among active NCAA Division III coaches.

WARTBURG QUICK FACTS -  Wartburg is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in Waverly, Iowa. The location of the college moved many times between Illinois and Iowa until permanently settling in Waverly in 1935. Notable Alumni include: major league baseball umpire Don Denkinger, Wartburg Sports Information Director KatieJo Kuhens and Jack Salzwedel, Chairman and CEO of American Family Insurance.
